Every year Avys birthday falls when we're on our annual holiday in France. For a while when you asked her when her Birthday was, instead of saying May she'd reply 'France'. She loves it. We all do. This year we had a great party at the campsite with all our new friends including musical statues which I'm a terrible judge on and also 'Pie Face' which sent all the kids crazy from the cream. :)
But it was the presents that got me thinking again. As well as amount of Frozen accessories and lots of hair clips, she also received some Lego - Lego Friends. Now this was my suggestion as I knew she'd love it but even still, seeing it makes me frustrated.
The girls in Lego Friends are a completely different shape to the usual Lego characters. These girls do not compare with Wildstyle (my personal fav Lego character). They are much slimmer, so you can't interchange them with other characters so there isn't as much creativity to be had. Plus Avy can't swap pieces with her brother. Lego is an activity where they can both play together for hours so it would be best if they can share.
The fact that the body shape is so different bothers me as it tells her that girls are supposed to see their bodies differently. The standards aren't the same - they need to be skinny. They have to fill a different mold. They are all very pretty and have fabulous hair, but where is the inspiration?
Lego friends is far from ideal but at least it gets her building and creating and it's an activity she loves. So do we still keep getting it for her when it's the only type she wants or try and encourage her in other ways? I don't have the answer yet but I'm sure she'll help me figure it out. What do you think?
